Arrival and departures
Travelling by plane
- You should arrive into and depart from Kilimanjaro Airport (airport code JRO).
- You should arrive on the Sunday at the beginning of your placement between 12:30am and 9pm. Medical Projects staff will be in Kilimanjaro Airport between these times to escort you to our accommodation.
- You should depart from Kilimanjaro Airport on the Saturday at the end of your placement at any time.
We recommend checking a website called SkyScanner when booking flights, there can be some good deals on flights, we have included a flight checking app below for your convenience.
If you are travelling on a British passport you will require a tourist visa for your trip to Tanzania. The easiest and cheapest way to do this is to get your visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport. For British passport holder this just requires you to fill in a form, and costs US$50. You will also need a Work Permit, which allows you to undertake work experience in Tanzania. This costs US$200 and will be arranged by our staff once you arrive in Kilimanjaro. Further information can be found in your Essential Information pack.
If you are travelling on an alternative passport, you may need to apply for a visa in advance of leaving your home country. You should get in touch with your local Tanzanian Embassy in order to discuss the visa requirements for your nationality. It is your responsibility to ensure you fit the necessary visa requirements for your nationality.
Finding the correct insurance for your trip is very important and we will not take students who are not suitably covered.
International students should take out comprehensive travel insurance. Normal travel insurance will not necessarily cover you for your work experience within a hospital. We recommend using a company called Wesleyan.
- Website: http://www.wesleyan.co.uk/insurance/elective-travel
- Telephone: 0800 197 4490
We recommend calling the team to ensure you receive the correct insurance package. You may source your own insurance as long as it covers your time within the hospital.
Terms & Conditions / Parental Consent
All students under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian complete this section. Please read and agree to the terms and conditions: Terms and Conditions. If you are aged 18 or over, you may complete with your own details.
Health Declaration Form
Before you begin your trip we require a small amount of information about your current or past health conditions. This is so that we have all relevant information on hand just in case you need to see a doctor while you are away!
All students under the age of 18 must have their parent or guardian fill in this form. If you are aged 18 or over you can fill in the form yourself. Once completed please email the form to your student advisor at email@example.com. You can also post it to us at Medical Projects, Clavering House, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 3NG.
Students are advised to speak to their GP about the appropriate vaccinations before travelling. They will have your complete medical history and will be able to advise the most appropriate vaccinations and up-to-date information about anti-malarials.
We post out a Medical Projects T-shirt to all students 3-4 weeks after the placement is confirmed. Students are asked to wear their Medical Projects T-shirts when they land at Kilimanjaro Airport. This is to help us identify you on arrival and it also helps you meet other students at connecting airports.
Whilst on placement you will be required to dress in suitable clothing.
- Males: smart trousers and a long sleeved shirt
- Females: dress/skirt/trousers that fall below the knee and a smart top.
Scrubs and goggles
Students are required to take a set of scrubs and goggles. A set of Medical Projects scrubs can be purchased here:
Add an extra week?
We want to ensure every student gains the best possible experience when they join us. If you wish to add an additional week to your trip where you can experience an additional department or take part in our weekend trip, your personal student advisor can update your application. If you would like to take advantage of this please email Eleanor at: firstname.lastname@example.org
We advise students to take between £60-80 per week they are with us. You can not change your money into Tanzanian Shillings outside of Tanzania. It is therefore easiest to either bring a debit card with you and use local ATMs to withdraw cash, or to bring money in British Pounds, Euros or US Dollars to exchange once you arrive.
