Our partner hospital is a modern 600 bed hospital based in the Transylvanian city of Brașov. Romania has long been known for its large Paediatric hospitals to deal with the increased numbers of young children. Students can spend time in the following departments:
- General Medicine
- Paediatric Surgery
- Plastic Surgery
- General Paediatrics
- Intensive Care
Where in Transylvania?
Our placement takes place in the city of Brașov. This is within the Transylvania region of Romania, ringed by the Carpathian Mountains. It's known for its medieval Saxon walls and bastions, the towering Gothic-style Black Church and lively cafes. Piaţa Sfatului (Council Square) in the cobbled old town is surrounded by colorful baroque buildings and is home to the Casa Sfatului, a former town hall turned local history museum.

How It Works
Our projects are supervised overseas hospital work experience placements. We arrange the hospital placement and also all the logistics such as accommodation, transport, food and social activities. We provide 25 hours hospital work experience per week, mock interview workshops and clinical training sessions. This is then supported 24/7 by our UK team.
Occupational Health Requirements:
Students who travel to our European project will need to undergo a couple of important occupational health requirements. You can complete these tests with your GP before you travel. This will include a screening for Hep B & C and also a swab test for MRSA and EBSL. These are normally free from your NHS general practitioner. Please note, if you use a private healthcare provider they may charge between £50-£200.
We use our partner hostel in the centre of Brașov which is approximately a 20 minute walk from the hospital. All students share a 6 or 8 bed dorm that is reserved for Medical Projects students only, which are equipped with lockers for personal items. The hostel has a communal area where students can meet in the evening to discuss the day's cases. There is also a computer and wifi areas so students can keep in touch with friends and family. There is always a Medical Projects member of staff on-site at the accommodation.
Brașov is an incredible city to explore during the evenings and weekends. The Baroque style buildings house small cafes and restaurants where students can soak up the local culture. During winter there are snow capped mountains that hide Transylvanian castles and during the summer the squares fill with seating where students can relax with a cold drink.
Summer Weekend trips
Students who join us for two weeks or more will have the chance to explore Romania a little more with one of our weekend trips. During the summer months we arrange activities such:
- White water rafting
- Mountain cable cars
- Segway tours
- Adventure parks
- Mountain hiking
- Tours of Transylvanian castles from Brasov
- Visits to the historical sites of Brasov
Winter Weekend Trips
During the winter months (December - April) we run a weekend trip to Poiana, which is one of Eastern Europe's best ski destinations. Set in the breathtaking pine forests of the Carpathian Mountains, this picturesque purpose built resort is undoubtedly one of the best value for money ski resorts in Europe. Ski holidays in Poiana Brasov offer an ideal ski area for beginners to learn and several testing runs for intermediates seeking to improve.
For more information about the weekend trips please contact your Student Advisor once you have secured your place on the project.
